About the Nice Classification
The answers below are WIPO’s English text. Full FAQ on WIPO
It is an international classification system used to classify goods and services for the purposes of the registration of marks.
There are 34 classes of goods and 11 classes of services. The class headings describe in very broad terms the nature of the goods or services contained in each class. The explanatory notes describe in greater detail the types of products or services included in that class. The most detailed level is the alphabetical list, which contains around 10,000 indications of goods and 1,000 indications of services.
Offices that use it can accept applications against a single classification system. Goods and services are classified the same way in every country that has adopted it. Because the classification exists in several languages, applicants can reuse those indications instead of translating a list of goods and services into another office’s language.
It is revised continuously. A new edition is published every five years and, since 2013, a new version of each edition is published every year. A version includes additions, deletions, and wording changes adopted since the previous version. An edition also includes amendments from that five-year period, such as moving a good or service from one class to another.
